How Long Does a Hot Mop Shower Pan Last? Durability Explained
All systems used for waterproofing a shower pan claim lifetime durability for up to 50 years. Let’s look at the facts liquid applied membranes emerged in the late 60’s i.e. Red Guard and many other liquid applied not until after 2007, i.e. Hydroban.
The Kerdi System
The Kerdi system emerged in 1987. PVC liner systems began in the mid 60’s and gained ground in the 80’s and still have a voice in the industry today. Most if not all have made improvements to their products not only to make their product better but to get a bigger share of the market that they desire. Making a complete system as Kerdi has done and others have followed. Using only their products for the whole shower system for the water proofing.
Hot Mopping For Shower Pans
Hot mopping for shower pans began in 1957 as an alternative to the lead or copper pans that were the mainstay of the industry at the time. It was a proven product for waterproofing in the roofing industry, and grew to be the most used method in southern California and has expanded to the central and northern parts of the state and to the east in Las Vegas NV. Many contractors still use it today having the confidence of a product that has proved itself successful for decades. Not to mention that hot asphalt has been used for millennia as far back as ancient Egypt and the roman empire! Many contractors have reported from older sections within LA county where homes built in the 60s they have tore out existing showers for remodel that had hot mop shower pans still functioning as when 1st installed. All shower pan waterproofing systems require proper procedures for the finish shower pan liner to perform at its best and for durability. All showerpan waterproofing systems can be categorized as liners as they all “line” the showerpan area with protection against water intrusion and damage to the areas around the shower itself.
PVC & Other Liners
PVC and other liners need to have the inside corner folds done so as to not to retain water that could let mold develop in those pockets. Outside corners need to be cut and specialty formed pieces need to be added with glues and/or the proper adhesives. Same for the drain connection recommended manufacturers products must be used to ensure effectiveness.
Roll On Products
Roll on products need to be applied in multiple layers with the proper dry time in between coats and be within a certain temperature range when applied. Some roll on products recommend that mats or mesh must be used with their system.
Considerations
Kerdi systems recommend that their whole system shower waterproofing be used. Which may include the preformed pan slope, bench areas, curb pieces, wall board, the drain, and the sheet membrane. Not all of these need to be used to use the Kerdi system but always check before beginning installation. Kerdi sheet membrane is bonded to itself with unmodified thin set mortar, which they have their own product that they recommend, speciality corner pieces are also offered and recommended. They also have a Kerdi band product that can be used for the seam sealing. Kerdiseal is also offered for pipe penetrations into your shower area.
Hot Mopping Benefits
Hot moppinging on the other hand has far fewer requirements and materials needed to get a superior showerpan liner that can be installed and tested in the same day. Everything that is needed comes to you with the technician that arrives on site! Its time tested durability is well documented. Just remember to use a licensed contractor with a reputable name that carries all the proper insurance.
